fiction contests and other opportunities: June 2008

I spend a lot of time each year compiling, then misplacing, information on the best-paying, most prestigious or otherwise interesting opportunities for the fiction writer. I resolved to keep a set of constantly updated links in one place. I've been storing it in a neverending gmail conversation with myself. I thought a few writers may appreciate it.

Always check the journals or entities for current deadlines and requirements. They may have gone under, changed fees or deadlines, taken a hiatus, updated word counts, or otherwise changed pertinent information. This list is current as of the moment you finish reading this sentence.

A pet peeve of mine is the "no simultaneous submissions" policy of some of these contests and the occasional litmag. With the difficulty of getting published and the dearth of widely-read magazines in which to publish stories, I think this requirement is ridiculous. Especially when some waiting times for responses reach six months or more. I don't have that kind of bloody time. If you win one, just withdraw from the others. Some of the contests on the list specifically demand no simsubs. Horseshit.
